iPhone running slow? Here is how you to speed it up

When you buy a new iPhone, it runs smoothly and you are satisfied with its performance. But after some months of using, your phone starts running slower.

Apple already admitted that the older iPhones are slowing down due to aging batteries. Or the devices running older operating systems like iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s are also getting slower in order to prevent a sudden shutdown. If your iOS device gets this problem, follow these tips to improve it now.

  1. Free up memory and create some space for iPhone

Low storage is one of the reasons why your phone is running slower. To solve this problem, you can remove some unnecessary apps, delete some photos, music, videos, SMS which you no longer need or move your files to the Cloud. iOS 11 introduces some new features to help you recover some storage space.

Now, you go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. After that, select Manage Storage under the Storage tab. A colorful chart will appear and show you how much space is being used and how much free space you have got left. Below the chart, you can see a list of apps and how much space they are taking up on your phone. Here, you just select the apps you don’t need and delete them easily by tapping on an app and then select Delete App on the next screen. Besides, you can delete an unnecessary app from your Home Screen by pressing and holding an app until it jiggles and then press the X in the upper left corner.

With Photos, music, videos, and SMS, if you want to free up space from these apps, you just need to open the app and select unnecessary photos, songs/albums, videos or conversations and then delete them.

  1. Apply new HEIF and HEVC formats

IOS 11 introduces new file formats for photos and videos that make smaller file sizes. HEIF is a new format for Photos and HEVC is a new format for videos. In reality, photos and videos take up a huge space of storage. Therefore, if you use these new formats, you can save a considerable amount of your iphone’s storage space. To do this, just go to Settings > Camera > Formats.  And then, select High Efficiency to use the new HEIF and HEVC formats.

Note: The new formats are available only for iOS devices with at least the A10 Fusion chip, like Iphone 7, Iphone 7 Plus, 10.5-inch Ipad Pro, 12.9-inch iPad Pro and later.

  1. Update apps

The old apps will not run quickly or smoothly on a new software update. After updating your iPhone, you should check to see if you have got the latest versions of apps. To do this, launch the App Store app from your home screen, then tap on Updates menu and select Update All to update your apps.

  1. Turn off automatic updates feature

Same as with previous versions, tons of apps can run in the background. It means that apps will automatically update themselves even when they are not in use. However, this feature significantly occupies your device’s CPU. So, it ‘s a good idea to disable this feature and update your apps manually from the App Store.

Now, you go to Settings > iTunes & App Store, then tap on the toggle switch to turn off Updates under the Automatic Downloads section.

  1. Disable background app refresh

Background App Refresh will allow your iPhone’s apps to refresh their content in the background by themselves. For example, Facebook or Twitter app will update new content. Though it is helpful and saves time for you, it occupies your iPhone’s storage space. To disable this feature, just go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh, and then tap on the toggle switch to turn off.

  1. Change transparency and motion effects

With a number of motion effects that Apple has added to iOS, they tend to move when you tilt your iPhone. In fact, these motion effects will improve your experience, but not helpful if they result in choppy animations.

To disable this feature, go to Settings > General >Accessibility > Reduce Motion, then tap on the toggle button to turn on Reduce Motion. You can also turn off Auto-Play Message Effects here.

Next, you go back to the Accessibility screen, tap on the Increase Contrast (above Reduce Motion) option and tap on the toggle switch to turn on the Reduce Transparency option. This feature will reduce the transparency and blur effects, but it can also help speed up your Iphone.

  1. Adjust location services

Actually, Location Services will chew up your phone’s battery life. However, if your iPhone is draining its battery fast,  then it’s time for you to reduce the number of apps requesting your device’s location.

iOS 11 gives you more options to control apps access to your location. Now, you will be able to select While Using the App option in order to both control and speed up your phone. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services, then adjust the settings for all of apps that use location services.

  1. Restart your Iphone

If none of the above solutions works for you, try restarting your device. If your iPhone has been in use for several days or weeks, just give it a break and power it off and then turn it back on. A simple restart will clear out the memory and can fix infected apps.
